Media Heritage

As a teenager growing up in the state of Michigan, Dr. Monée N. Merriweather greatly admired the media accomplishments of her 1st cousin, Casey Kasem of American Top 40.

She recalls his exciting family visits where he shared awesome Hollywood stories and seemed larger than life. During one particular one-on-one conversation, Dr. Monée recalls Casey correcting her verbal use of double negatives. Hiding her embarrassment, Dr. Monée pondered Casey’s critique, but because of her enormous respect for him, the spoken language became essentially important to her. Additionally, Dr. Monée became aware of Casey’s philanthropic endeavors which went beyond family and inspired her to look to herself in relation to the world as an opportunity to help others. Dr. Monée found her life’s passion one night while watching Johnny Carson on the “Tonight Show” interviewing Dr. Joyce Brothers.
